Day 9 - Albany - A day of rest
|
This morning I enjoyed a bit of a sleep in. Then decided after breakfast to have a walk up Mount Clareance. Which is meant to give great views of the surrounding area.
The walk to the summit is about 5kms from the hostel. Today is lovely and sunny. When I got to the turnoff for the summit I noticed the road was closed. They had closed the road for a billy cart race down the hill. They said it was okay to walk up still.
As I was walking up I noticed an avenue of trees. These have been planted for fallen soldiers from past wars. There is a war memorial at the top. Mt Clareance was the last point of mainland Australian soldiers saw when they went to fight at Gallipoli.
When I got to the summit I was the only person there. The summit looks across the bay and town. You get a really good view from up here. I enjoyed the views and then began my walk back to town.
On the way back through town I went past Dog Rock. Albany has these massive boulders/granite hills all around. The town has grown around these and in some instances incorporated it into their properties. It is partly what gives Albany its character.
Before lunch I had a walk around the waterfront. It was a very pleasant stroll just relaxing and enjoying the sun. I then went to find somewhere to eat, as it was almost lunchtime.
For the rest of the afternoon I was just doing more relaxing and planning my next few days of riding. Tomorrow I'll be riding up the Stirling Ranges. Which is about 90kms away. If the weather is still good I'm hoping to climb up Bluff Knoll. Which is the highest peak in the south of WA (approx just over 1000m).

There are a lot of big boulders around Albany. This one seems to look like a dog! |
