Adelaide to Melbourne

Day 8: Mount Gambier to Portland
Distant travelled: 105 km (65 miles) - Total so far: 762 km (473 miles)

Useful Resources
Portland

Well after a good sleep last night I was up nice and early today. It was a little foggy, so took my time getting ready. By the time I was all set to go the fog had lifted a bit. My first destination for the day is Nelson. Which is just over the border in VIC.

Nelson is a small town on the Glenelg River. I stopped for a little while for a bite to eat. It was a very nice spot to stop before I continued my ride to Portland.

Nelson, Glenelg River

Portland is about 60km from Nelson. Along the way you pass a number of pine tree forest plantations. Also I noticed the return of the rolling hills. It was nice to have a few short hill climbs along with some nice descents. I arrived in Portland at around 2pm.

Portland is the earliest permanent settlement in Victoria. It also has a major port, quite a few old buildings and a tram which goes along the seafront. Whilst enjoying my afternoon coffee, this man called Peter sat at my table. He seems to be a bit of a character in Portland. He walks around wearing an American Navy uniform and pretends he is sometimes James Bond. After chatting to Peter, I rode around town, as it was a really nice sunny day.

I was going to spend tomorrow in Portland, but have decided that it would be nice to go to Port Fairy instead. The ride is about 60km, so shouldn't take too long.
