Day 5: Beechworth to Jingelic
Distance travelled 151 km (94 miles) - Total so far: 500 km (311 miles)
Well last night it rained and rained. Pleased to say my tent stayed nice and dry. When I woke up this morning, I looked outside the tent and the blue sky had returned. Today I am riding to Jingelic, which is approximately 140kms away. Not planning on going through any major towns, so will need to get food whilst I'm in Beechworth.
The first 60kms to the Hume Dam were uneventful. I had planned on riding over the dam, but it was closed until April 2011. So instead I rode the road around to the other side of the dam. When I got there, I had a break for 30 minutes. Over the bridge I refilled my bottles and camelbak. As the next 70kms there is no other town until my destination for the night.
The ride along the Murray River Road is a series of undulating hills. None of them go for that long and the traffic was really light. This route is very scenic, as you have the river on the left and farms on the right. About half way along the road I stopped and enjoyed one of the muffins I had bought in Beechworth.
Got to Jingelic at 4.30pm and stopped at the corner store for a couple of drinks before going down to the campsite. The campsite is on the river bank behind the pub. Just a couple of weeks ago this area was all in flood. It is still drying out and I found a concrete slab to pitch my tent on.
Was planning on getting a meal at the pub, but the kitchen is only open Thursday-Sunday. So will have my noodles for dinner instead.
I am really pleased with the route I took today. As this day has been the most scenic so far. Also tomorrow I'll be leaving Victoria for NSW and just want to mention that the drivers here have been really well behaved. Lets hope it continues over the border.
