Day 4: Goulburn to Tuena
|
Had a good sleep last night. The campsite has certainly seen better days, but at least the showers were nice and hot. I could even see the big merino from my tent, as it is lit up at night.
It was still grey this morning. At least it wasn't raining. Once I packed up I headed towards Crookwell, which is approx 50kms from Goulburn.
The ride to Crookwell was a steady climb. About 10kms before Crookwell I stopped at this small windfarm. They weren't moving today, as there was no wind. Which was great for me. After I took my photos, I rode into Crookwell.
I got to Crookwell at about 10.30am. Crookwell is famous for it's wool and growing potatoes. Well that was what it said in the tourist information office. I had a late breakfast and after a walk around the town. Seems to have a few nice cafes and shops.
Once I finished looking around I headed out of town towards Tuena. There was a nice hill to climb straight outside of Crookwell. Once I got over it, it began to rain. I pulled over and put my waterproof jacket on and stopped at a small village called Binda.
It was still raining when I left Binda, but at least it wasn't heavy. Had a couple more nice climbs and a bit of dirt(mud) to navigate before I got to Tuena.
Tuena was established as a gold rush town in the 1850's. As gold was found in the surrounding area. But after a few years the rush passed and today it has a general store, a pub and three churches. Most of the original buildings are no longer around. The locals have set up a nice little camping area which is free.
You just have to pay for your showers ($1 for 4 minutes). I've had my 4 minutes for the day.
The hills today were really scenic and I also got to see my first live wombat for this trip. When I stopped to get it's photo it hid in a storm pipe and wouldn't come back out! This afternoon at the campsite it has stopped raining and the sun is even trying to come out.
Tomorrow I'll be heading towards Canowindra. The first half of the ride will be going up hills, then it is mostly downhill.
