Day 37 - Kadina to Clare
|
When I checked into the caravan park yesterday the manager got me to put my tent between a couple of caravans. Good job she did as the wind was really blowing for most of the night, but I was sheltered. Just a little concern if the wind got really bad one of the caravans would had blown over and squashed me in my tent!
Well I didn't get squashed last night. When I set off, just after sunrise, I had a slight tailwind. This slowly increased throughout the morning. After about 45kms I stopped at Lochiel to enjoy second breakfast. I was making really good time, it had only just turned 9am.
I then continued on to Clare via Blyth. Blyth is another small town, just at the foot of the hill climb upto the Clare Valley. At the rest area in Blyth they have used a number of old photos to create these metal screens. It was really interesting looking at the photo and then seeing the metal screen which matched.
Was a really nice climb, with a great view of where I had just come from. Also the tailwind was pushing me up, which made it a little easier.
Once at the top of the hill I was in the Clare Valley. The Clare Valley is a major wine growing region, specializing in Riesling. I then came to the main town of Clare. Because of the favorable winds I got here at about 11.30am. So I rode on to the campsite, about 3km out of town, and pitched my tent.
For the afternoon I followed the Riesling Trail back into town for lunch. This trail is a great cycle route going pass vineyards. Found a great bakery in town which makes yummy Cornish Pasties. After lunch I continued exploring the trail. There were these really cool model trains (I love trains) which are ran by a group of enthusiasts. Only cost $2 to have a go. So I did a lap with all the other big kids. Had a great time on the train. Certainly a surprised highlight of the trip.
Today has been a great day. Full of fun, little surprises. Also having a really good tailwind made it all the better. Can't believe my journey will be over in 3 more days.

The Riesling Trail, a really nice cycle trail
I then headed back into town and done a little shopping. When I was about to head back to the caravan park I met this other cyclist, John, who lives in Clare. John as also ridden across from Perth to Adelaide. So it was funny comparing our stories and how similar our experiences were. We both loved it.
