Day 36 - Cowell to Kadina
|
Today it was nice to wake up at sunrise and just relax in my tent. As I had a big ride yesterday, I was pleased to have hopefully a nice short, easy day today.
Once I did drag myself out of my tent, I had breakfast and a walk around the harbour. I left the campsite at about 9am and had a look around town at the old sandstone buildings. Nice to see a town which has kept a lot of its heritage in tack and still being actively used.
Was windy again today. But seeing as I didn't have too far to go I didn't mind. Got to the ferry terminal nice and early. The terminal is located at an area called Lucky Bay. There isn't that much here, except for the boat and a kiosk.
The ferry takes a couple of hours to cross the gulf to Wallaroo. As I'm with a bicycle I get to go on first. Then I need to strap it to the side so it doesn't go overboard! The boat is only a few months old and is very comfortable inside. Which is great, as when we were about to leave it started to rain. Felt nice to relax for a couple of hours. Also the trip with the bike only cost $41. So not a bad deal. Once at Wallaroo I collected TJ and continued my short journey to Kadina.
Kadina is the main town on the Yorke Peninsula. The town was originally founded upon the discovery of copper. It used to have a population in excess of 20,000 during the copper boom. The mine has been closed for a number of years and the industry it supports now is farming. So it is still a thriving town.
I have certainly enjoyed my time going around the Eyre Peninsula. There is some great coastline (especially the rugged west coast), quaint small towns and beautiful national parks. Sometimes though it does get a bit windy.
Tomorrow I'll be heading inland towards the Clare Valley. This region is an area used for vineyards and wine production. My final destination, Adelaide, certainly seems a lot closer now than it did yesterday.
