Day 26 - Nullarbor Roadhouse to Nundroo
|
Enjoyed a lovely sunset last night. Also my camp neighbours were a motorbike gang heading to Perth. Nice guys, even though they all had beards!
This morning is certainly a bit cooler than yesterday. The ride started great, riding towards the sun as it rose across the horizon with a nice tailwind. A great way to start the morning.
My first stop was the Head of Bight to see the whales. It is about 12kms off the main road. As I wasn't keen on adding an extra 24kms to a big ride day, I hitched a lift down to the whales. I was fortunate that this lady and her mum I had met at a previous campsite gave me a lift down.
Wow, there were so many whales. I counted at least 15. The females come to this location to give birth and then they look after their calf. Kind of like a nursery. It was so much fun seeing them splash around so close to shore.
Think we spent a good hour there before we drove back to where I had parked my bike. I was then back riding across the last bit of the Nullarbor. The scenery then changed back to trees and dense scrubland. There was so much shade for me today. The irony is I didn't need it like yesterday, as it was very overcast.
I then started to go over a series of hills. I haven't been up and down so much since I was in SW WA. It was great to be climbing some hills again. Albeit smallish ones. This part of the ride took me through an aboriginal reserve. There is a small community which live out here. Also they used to operate a roadhouse, but it has been closed for a couple of years. Instead I enjoyed some of my rations I still have left for lunch. Pleased to say my rations have lasted me well and I should get to Ceduna without having to eat roadkill.
Once I had rode through the aboriginal reserve, I started to notice farms. Haven't seen fields so green for a while. Felt kind of strange, like I was leaving the outback and coming to something a whole lot more familiar.
It was just gone 5pm and I saw my destination for the night, Nundroo. It is pretty much just a roadhouse and a service station. They have a cheap, $8, campground. So I pitched my tent up and enjoyed dinner.
I was very pleased the weather was a lot cooler today and the winds were generally more of help. Tomorrow if the weather stays cool I might be in Ceduna. My first town in 1200kms!

Don't often get to see a dingo during the daytime |
One of the lovely shady picnic areas. How I so wanted to see one of these yesterday |
