Day 2: Shoalhaven to Shoalhaven river
|
Last night I heard a noise outside my tent. When I looked outside, I saw this possum sitting on my saddle. Then I noticed a second one hanging on the frame. By the time I got my camera they had gone. It was very funny, as I had no idea what the noise was. When I woke up and looked outside the tent this morning, there was this really nice blue sky. I got on the bike at about 8am and headed for Nowra for breakfast. The ride to Nowra is pretty flat (it follows a river), so got there by 9am.
Nowra is the main town in the area, so after breakfast I got a few items from the supermarket. Ended up leaving at about 10am and followed the road towards Braidwood.
Because of the nice blue sky, there was no cloud cover. So it was starting to get warm. The ride for the next 40kms was mostly uphill. Most of it was gentle climbing, but there were a few steep bits about every 10kms.
After about 35kms out of Nowra I found a nice shady spot to have a bite to eat and drink. I then continued my climbing. It started to level out and then there was a nice little decent towards Nerriga. At Nerriga I stopped for lunch.
Nerriga has a pub, a couple of houses and that is about it. I relaxed on the verandah and enjoyed my lunch and a nice cold drink. I asked the locals at the pub if there was a nice spot to camp near by. They said about 20kms away you could camp near the Shoalhaven river.
So I headed down to the river. The ride to the river was nice and quick. I found a nice spot away from the road and near the river.
After I got my tent setup I went for a swim in the river. The water was so refreshing and relaxing. For the rest of the afternoon I just relaxed next to the river.
Tomorrow I'll be heading for Goulburn. I was originally going to go to Braidwood. But a lot of locals at Nerriga said the road was badly graded (about 50kms) at the moment. By cutting through to Goulburn I only have to travel on 3kms of dirt, plus I don't have to go on the King's Hwy. So I get to avoid a lot of the trucks.
