Day 2 - Mandurah to Bunbury
|
After a really good sleep I was awake at about 6am. So I got to enjoy sunrise. Again the weather looks nice for riding.
By the time I had packed away and had breakfast, I was riding just after 8am. My destination for today is Bunbury, which is about 100km away.
About 10km into the ride, the suburbs gave way to bush and farmland. Made a change from seeing houses and drive through restaurants. Pretty much the whole ride had a nice shoulder running along side the road. So again I didn't have to worry to much about the traffic.
Along the highway between Mandurah and Bunbury there are rest areas. These are really good as they are about 10-20kms apart and all seem to have a picnic table. I stopped at a couple to enjoy second breakfast and lunch.
I then continued on to Bunbury. I took the old road via Australind. This was a little less busy, but I did loose my shoulder I had on the main road. But the view across the water was nice. About 7km before Bunbury I saw this bike path following the road, there were no signs to say where it would take me. I took it anyway. The path meandered around the waterfront via the campsite I was going to stay at.
When I got to the campsite they told me it was going to be $37 for the night. I asked if that was for a single unpowered spot. She said they don't provide unpowered spots in the Winter. No idea why. Anyway, I went over to the YHA and checked myself in there. The hostel is very central and just a few minutes from town and the beach.
After I was cleaned, it was only 2.30pm. Being a Sunday most of the town was shut, as WA currently only allows limited Sunday trading. This is to change from next Sunday though, when it will come in line with all the other States in the country. So I went down to the water and relaxed. I then had a walk over to the beach.
Bunbury is also famous for being one of only a handful of places where you can stand in the water and wait for the dolphins to swim in each morning. I did this when I was last here in 1998. It was a lot of fun. Won't being doing it this time though. As will be leaving nice and early.
Today was again a nice riding day. The scenery should start changing a bit tomorrow. As I'll be following the coast through to Busselton.
