A lap around Tasmania

Day 19: A walk up Mount Rufus

Useful Resources

Last night all the animals seemed to had come out to play. First we saw Quolls running across the campsite like greyhounds. Then the possums came out on the hunt for any stray bananas. Pleased to say they didn't find my stash.

This morning both Kayla and I are going on a walk up Mount Rufus. The walk is about 18kms long and takes about 7 hours. The weather today looks great for a walk.

We left our campsite at about 8.30am. We followed the path around Lake St Clair. It was a little cool but very nice still. The path up to Mount Rufus passes by a couple of very picturesque lakes. We both stopped and took some photos.

After, we continued our walk and noticed the terrain changing from forests to a sort of heath type land. The landscape kept changing as we continued our climb. As we got higher we were starting to notice more and more mountains around us.

We reached the summit at about 12pm. The views were as usual breathtaking. We could see a lot of the mountains we had cycled passed over the last few days. Also we could of course see where we are going to. There are certainly less mountains for the trip to Hobart.
Mount Rufus

After we had enjoyed our lunches and taken our photos, we headed back down the mountain. The path down was at one point very steep. We then got back amongst the trees. The walk back to the campsite seemed to take ages. I think partly due to the last part not being as visually impressive.

When we got back to the information centre, we had a look in the cafe for a drink. Wow. It was certainly expensive, $5 for a coffee or $6 for a hot chocolate. So we skipped it.

For the rest of the afternoon I relaxed at the campsite. For a paid campsite it is certainly lacking on basic facilities, like picnic tables and camp kitchen. It is a shame, as the location is great. The owners seem to care more for building nice little cabins than basic facilities for campers. About a 10 minute walk from information centre, into the national park, there is a nice campsite along the water. At least I know for next time.

Tomorrow we are riding again. Most of the riding is going to be downhill. Hobart is starting to feel close. I'm getting kind of excited now. So far this has been a really good trip. Let's hope the last few days continue that trend.
