Day 18 - Preparation Day in Norseman
|
Last night I was looking at a book about The Nullarbor Plain. In this book it mentioned that the first person to ride across it was an Arthur Richardson in 1896! Pretty impressive, as I'm sure the road (if there was a road) was in a lot poorer state than it is now.
Today I enjoyed a sleep in as it was raining and blowing a gale outside. A big change in the weather from yesterday's sun. So I'm happy today I'm just preparing for my next leg of the tour.
When the weather cleared I had a walk up to the top Beacon Hill. From the top of the hill you get a good view of the town and also the surrounding countryside. One thing I noticed was that Norseman is certainly still a very active gold mining town. At the top of the hill there are some old abandoned mines from the early 1900's.
Once I enjoyed the view I walked back down the hill and had a look around town. Which didn't take long, as it is a small place.
After my sightseeing, I visited the supermarket to get my provisions. I've allowed for enough food to last me for a couple of weeks. To supplement my meals, I'm also going to being eating at the roadhouses along the way. With all the food I purchased I headed back to the hotel to repack my panniers. I now have one whole pannier full of food!
For the remainder of the day I'm going to relax and give the bike a quick clean. Tomorrow I'm hoping to leave early and my first stop will be the Fraser Range station. Which is a working sheep station just off the highway.
Whilst I'm crossing the Nullarbor I won't be able to update this blog. As there will be no mobile coverage for about 1200kms. But of course when I get to Ceduna there will be plenty of updates on what I have been up to. I'm hoping to be in Ceduna in approx 8-13 days time. Depending on weather and any possible detours I make along the way.
