Day 16 - Cape Le Grand NP (Lucky Bay) to Grass Patch
|
What a fantastic place to stay for the night. After dinner last night I enjoyed watching twilight over the bay. It was just magical having the beach to myself, except for a few kangaroos hoping between the waves. A little while later at the beach I enjoyed watching yet another moonrise.
This morning I awoke to a mob of kangaroos around my tent. I've noticed sunrise is getting earlier, then worked out why, because I'm heading east!
I left camp just after 7am. It was a lovely blue sky day. For the first 50kms I had to head back towards Esperance and then join the main road to Norseman. I noticed that I was getting a headwind and that this would last, as I am going to be going north for the rest of the day.
To add to the wind I had a gradual upward gradient. So it was making the ride harder than I envisaged. Thankfully about 75kms later there was the small town of Gibson (population 120) that had a pub. So this was a perfect place to get a good feed and shelter from the wind.
Once I left Gibson the wind had dropped a bit, so the last 50kms to Grass Patch were a lot nicer. I arrived at Grass Patch at about 4pm.
Grass Patch is a small town with a Tavern. For $5 at the Tavern you get the key to the shower and laundry block. I'm the only person staying here. The place is better than a lot of caravan parks I've stayed at. The amenities are clean and there is even an area to cook. An added bonus is that I get to camp on the only patch of grass in Grass Patch!
Today has been a bit of a surprise in that I wasn't expecting the headwinds to be as strong. But in the end I got to where I wanted to for the day and am happy with that. Tomorrow I'll be heading into Norseman. My final town in WA before I start my trek east to Ceduna in SA.
