A lap around Tasmania

Day 13: Cradle Mountain - Dove Canyon Walk

Useful Resources

What an interesting night I had last night. Just when I was starting to go to sleep, I heard this noise near my tent. The noise got louder and after a few minutes I turned on my light. At the end of my tent, on the outside, there was this possum making a hole to get in. The possum was in the process of munching on my last banana. So after I had chased it away, I was left with a hole to fix. Dug out the duct tape and the hole is fixed until I get home. Note to self, don't leave yummy food at the edge of the tent for my little camp buddies to get at.

Besides that excitement, I had another good sleep and didn't wake up until after 7.30am. Normally I'm up around 6.30am. So it was nice to have a sleep in. After breakfast I headed for my walk.

I decided to walk down to the National Park office and from there follow the Dove Canyon walk. The weather this morning certainly felt cooler than yesterday and there was a bit more cloud.
At the beginning of the walk for today

The walk took me through lush alpine forests, following the river. So there were some nice small waterfalls to view. The walk then climbed up over the canyon. Looking over the edge of the canyon it did look a long way down. As I was continuing my walk, it started to rain slightly. But generally it didn't bother me as I was protected by the tree canopy.

The walk then joined the Dove Lake Board walk. So I decided to follow this for a couple of kms. The National Park has created this very long boardwalk from their office to Dove Lake (approx 7km). The reason for the boardwalk is to protect the environment from all the people which come walking here each year.

The rain started to get a little heavier and I was approaching the shuttle bus stop. So I got the bus back up to the National Park office. I did a couple more of the shorter walks around the office and then had a look at the displays they currently have on show at the office. There is an interesting art show, where a painter has recreated a number of famous paintings with Tassie Devils as his subjects.
Some interesting artwork in the gallery at the National Park office
I headed back up to the campsite and had some lunch at the cafe. I then just relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. I was pleased I rode to Dove Lake yesterday, as the weather is certainly not as nice today. I'm also happy to have a day off from riding, but am looking forward to the ride tomorrow.
