Day 12: Newcastle to The Entrance
|
Left Newcastle at 7am and it was very grey outside, but still not raining. After a few kms I joined the rail trail which starts at Adamstown and goes just past Redhead Beach. The rail trail is wonderfully maintained and is sealed for it's whole length. It passes through very scenic bushland and you even get to go through a tunnel and can pretend you are a train.
Once I rejoined the road I stopped at Hadley Cycles to replace the chain on the bike. I got there at 8.30am which was when the shop opened. The guy working there changed out the chain and didn't charge me anything for labour. We got chatting about touring and stuf, so was back on the road just after 9.30am.
Stopped at Swansea for breakfast. Swansea is at the inlet to another large inland lake, Lake Macquarie.
After my breakfast I continued to ride along the Pacific Hwy. For the next 10-20kms the road is very wide with a good shoulder and not much traffic. I then took the turn off through Munmorah State Conservation Area. I was going to camp here, but as I stayed in Newcastle last night decided to ride on.
As I was riding towards The Entrance the sun started to come out. Not sure where the rain is, but I'm not complaining. When I got to The Entrance, I went to the Blue Bay caravan park. The park is owned by a friendly old couple and is very well maintained with a swimming pool for me to also enjoy. After I got cleaned up I went for a walk to The Entrance.
The Entrance got it's name from being the entrance to Tuggerah Lake. Which is another one of the big inland lakes next to the ocean. The Entrance is a popular seaside location with families, thus has lots of accommodation. I stopped for lunch at a cafe on the waterfront. After I went to watch the Pelicans being fed at 3.30pm. This happens everyday and has been going on for years.
Tomorrow I will continue my ride along the the coast towards Sydney. Hopefully the weather will remain good, as it has for the whole trip so far.
