Day 12 - Moonan Flat to Devils Hole campground - 33kms
|
Last night I had a short walk over to the pub for dinner. It was a very pleasant evening enjoying my meal in the beer garden. Very tasty food. It was interesting chatting to the locals in the pub, such a social place.
No one came to collect any money for camping last night, so maybe it was free or I was just fortunate. After breakfast I had an early start, as didn't want to be cycling in the heat like yesterday.
The road slowly began climbing. After about 3-4kms I was riding on dirt and the climbing was getting steeper. Wasn't bad though, the road was well graded, gradient was no more than 10%, no traffic and nice views. On the way up I stopped a couple of times to have a break and enjoy the views. The road stayed liked this for the next 15kms, when I arrived at the Dingo fence.
At Dingo fence I was at an elevation of about 1300m. There are some great views of the area from here. After you pass through the gate, the road still climbs but at a lower grade (about 2-3%). The road is now not so well graded, there are a lot of loose stones, but still quite ridable.
I was now riding through part of Barrington Tops national park. The park situated on some rugged highland with some great forests, views and waterfalls. I stopped at the Pollblue camping area. It is a very spacious area, with toilets and a rainwater tank. It was a bit early to camp though so I refilled my water so that I would have enough for tomorrow. I then continued riding through the national park until I got to Devils Hole lookout and campground. This is my final destination for today.
The Devils Hole lookout has an amazing view across the national park. Throughout the afternoon I kept coming back to enjoy the views. The campground here is not as open as the one at Pollblue. You need to bring water, as there is no supply here, unless you want to filter and treat the water from a nearby stream.
I really enjoyed the climb up today to Barrington Tops. I had great weather and some impressive views to enjoy. Tomorrow I will continue my journey through the park and on to Gloucester. Most of the ride will be downhill, but will be on dirt, so most likely won't be going too fast!
