Day 11: Cooma to Queanbeyan
|
Rained most of last night and when I woke this morning at 6am, it was still raining. I was pleased I had checked into the motel last night, as it is certainly nicer than sitting in the tent waiting for the rain to stop. With it still raining, I took my time getting ready and having breakfast. By the time I was ready to go it was 9am and it had stopped raining.
With a break in the weather I rode 60kms to a small service station, where I stopped for a quick lunch. The ride was pretty scenic and I had a nice little tail wind pushing me along. Which was good, as the highway is a pretty straight road and it wouldn't been nice to be fighting a headwind.
After lunch, the sun began to come out for a little while. As I was just coming into Queanbeyan it started to drizzle. Then it began to pour. I stopped at the local tourist information centre to see if there was somewhere to camp near by. When I got inside there was no one there. I heard voices coming from the back room, so I popped my head around. All the staff were watching the Melbourne Cup. Once the race had finished I got directions to the camp site. It was still pouring outside, so waited a few minutes till it had eased off.
The campsite was only a couple of minutes away. Once I got the tent up and was showered the sun came out! I certainly got four seasons in one day today.
With it being nice again, I went for a walk around town. Queanbeyan is on the border of the ACT in NSW. It is the biggest town I've been in since Melbourne. It is also the first time I've had to stop at traffic lights since I started my trip.
I tried to find somewhere for coffee, but a lot of places had closed early for Melbourne Cup. I was able to find somewhere in the end in the local shopping centre. There isn't much else to do in Queanbeyan, so will hopefully leave early tomorrow (weather permitting).
